Using a Radio While Driving
Everyone has seen the insurance company commercials that detail how dangerous messing with the radio while driving can be. Radios interfere with a driver’s concentration and also require that the driver take a hand off of the wheel. Truck drivers have more than one radio that is a form of temptation. They have a radio for music and a radio used for communication purposes.
Radios that control what music comes through a truck’s speakers can be a serious temptation for any driver that is faced with hours of open road. The problem with radios is that they must be changed or adjusted whenever the driver enters or exits the area a station’s signal reaches. In empty areas, this can be a fairly frequent occurrence. In less empty areas, there are more stations from which the driver must choose.
The radio a driver uses for communication with other trucks is also a significant source of distraction. In many cases, it takes on the role of a cell phone. The difference being that the radio is always chattering whereas a cell phone has to be answered for there to be talking in the cab. A radio just chatters as drivers talk over the line.
In addition to the constant chattering, it is easy for an individual to pick up the radio and talk to any number of other truckers located in the same area. It used to be that ordinary cars would have radios and talk to the truck drivers as well. This creates an unlimited number of individuals that can distract the drivers of trucks everywhere. This creates a potentially dangerous situation in the event that an emergency occurs.
