The Purpose of Mud Flaps
Mud flaps are exterior accessories that are installed on long-haul semi trucks, SUVs, pickup trucks, and even cars. They are designed to protect the car from rocks, mud, and other objects that might get kicked up at a car by tires.
On long-haul semi trucks, the mud flaps are designed to prevent rocks, sand, mud, and other items from being kicked up by the wheels of the 18-wheeler and hitting cars near the 18-wheeler. Because the 18-wheeler’s tires are so much larger than ordinary cars’, they have the ability to kick up larger pieces of rock or debris from the road. When debris is kicked up from the road, it can crack a windshield and cause the driver of the other vehicle to lose visibility. When the driver can’t see, he or she is at risk of hitting things.
Another reason for mud flaps is to reduce the amount of water kicked up by the truck’s wheels in the event of rain. Trucks, like other large vehicles, kick up a lot of water off of wet roads. The mud flaps are, in theory, designed to reduce the amount of water from the road. This water can also cause visibility issues for drivers.
Unfortunately, some trucks lack mud flaps. This eliminates any benefit that can be gained from the flaps being in place. When trucks lack mud flaps, rocks and other objects can fly up and hit other drivers.
