Reasons to Impose Road Weigh Limits
Many roads across the country limit the total weight of or the size of vehicles allowed to drive on various roads. These limitations can be imposed for structural, environmental, or safety reasons.
Structurally, road limits protect the road. Many roads are built with grading material and base materials that are designed to support weight up to a certain point. When vehicles that are too heavy drive on a road designed for lighter vehicles, the road deteriorates.
When some roads deteriorate and start to break down, they break off chunks. These can be kicked up by tires on a variety of vehicles and damage other cars on the road. In addition, it leads to more frequent repairs. Construction zones are naturally hazardous for all vehicles and drivers.
A town or city may place a vehicle weight restriction on a road to protect the environment. This is not necessarily the greenery of the town. In many instances, the restriction is really designed to prevent the noise associated with heavier vehicles. Many towns will impose a “no engine brake” restriction in exchange for a weight restriction.
Safety is another big reason that a place will impose a weight limit. The town probably knows of tricky curves in the road or sharp turns that are hard to navigate. In addition, a road might go right by a school. The presence of large, slow to stop vehicles can be a significant danger to the children of the school. On the sharp turns or curves of the road, a truck has increased chances of rolling over or flipping.
