The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, or AAMVA, is a nonprofit organization that develops model programs in motor vehicle administration, law enforcement, and highway safety. In addition to being nonprofit, the AAMVA is a tax exempt organization. The AAMVA is also responsible for acting as an information clearinghouse in vehicle administration, law enforcement, and highway safety. It also acts as the international spokesperson for these interests.
Founded in 1933, the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators represents the state and provincial officials of both the United States and Canada who administer and enforce laws relating to all sorts of motor vehicles. The programs instigated by the AAMVA encourage uniformity and reciprocity among the states and provinces. This makes it easier for vehicles to go from state to state and province to province.
The association serves as a go between with other levels of government and with private sector industries. The development and research activities provided by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators provide guidelines for much more effective public service.
The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators engages with motor vehicle and law enforcement agencies, as well as entities from the private sector to advance practices, such as:
- Driver license
- Vehicle title
- Motor carrier
- Highway safety and security
- Identification
- Enforcement
